Is Ayurveda a science or a tradition?

Ayurveda indeed is a science. The concepts have been evolved and subjected to repeated tests using various pramanas or tools of knowledge.

What is symptomatic treatment? Whether is is practiced by ayurvedic physicians?

Treating the symptoms is known otherwise as symptomatic treatment. Such medicines most of the times will not correct the pathology but relieve the symptoms temporarily.
Vyadhipratyaneeka chikitsa mentioned in Ayurveda is almost similar to the popularly known symptomatic treatment. In some conditions medicines are given first for relieving the symptoms and later for correcting the pathology.

Why ayurvedic medicines act very slowly?

It indeed appears that the ayurvedic medicines act slowly compared to the allopathic medicines. The reason is that the ayurvedic treatment aims at breaking the pathology of the disease stage by stage. Medicines are given first to correct the initial imbalance and not to relieve the symptom.

What is prakruti?

Prakruti means the basic constitution of the body. A person gets his prakruti according to the dominant dosha(body humor) at the time of conception. All his attitudes are based on his prakruti.

What is panchakarma? Can every one undergo oil massage?

Oil massage is not a panchakarma.
Panchakarma are five procedures which purify the body of vitiated doshas. They thus pave way for proper functioning of the digestive power, body humors and tissues.
Oil massage is generally indicated foe every one. However there are some contraindications like indigestion, fever etc.

Does Ayurveda advocate fasting? How does it work?

Yes, fasting is one of the stages in the treatment of many diseases. A person with indigestion either at the GIT or at the tissue level will have to undergo fasting either total or partial. Indigestion and mal absorption are the first stages in the disease pathology. Fasting enhances the digestive fire, facilitates the digestion of the accumulated food stuff, proper evacuation. Body humors thus become free of undigested materials.

How the medicines act when applied externally?

Medicines on being applied on the skin come in contact with a type of Pitta(body humor) called Bhrajaka pitta. This absorbs the potency of medicines into the circulation to give the desire effect.

What is the importance of diet regimen during ayurvedic treatment?

Food that we eat provides the qualities to body humors and tissues. Wrong diet thus vitiates the humors. Progress of the disease can not be controlled until the diet is corrected. It is therefore important to follow the diet regimen during the treatment.
It is emphasized that diet regimen is not only for those who undergo ayurvedic treatment. Any person having imbalance of doshas must adopt a suitable food pattern.
